Whether or not you are a fan of the colder weather, there are some lovely elements to this time of year that you can’t help but appreciate. Whilst a lot of the natural world heads off to sleep until Spring, Jack Frost is busy painting the land with his icy artistry and as a nation we become home birds, craving our cosy havens and indulging in our favourite Winter warmers. A part of the seasonal magic is the amazing aromas of home cooked, hearty food, seasonal spices, hot toddies and all the other seasonal smells that immediately transport us back to our childhoods.
In this article we share how to recreate some of these Winter Aromas:
Potpourri
Potpourri, yes the dried flowers from the 80’s is making a big comeback! Take a look at this Mandarin, Cinnamon and Clove Potpourri from M&S Just from the name you can almost smell how wonderfully aromatic the potpourri is. Team it with this white potpourri bowl from Wilko for a visually effective centre piece.
Essential oils
Essential oils are a great way to make your house smell amazing and they come in a variety of different scents that will impact you in different ways. Here are our top 3x Winter Essential oils;
- Peppermint will re-energise you and lift your mood.
- Frankincense is claimed to balance the nervous system
- Orange is said to be a relaxant
Room Sprays
You have multiple options with room sprays, the air fresheners you can find in most supermarket’s, like this Glade Bali and Sandalwood spray from Sainsbury’s or, try this more exotic fragrance like this Black Fig spray from John Lewis.
Diffusers
Reed diffusers have risen in popularity over recent years. They can now be found in almost every high street department store. With a huge range of scents to choose from we really were spoilt for choice. In the end we chose The White Company diffuser called “Winter” which gives off a warm, spicy scent.
Plug ins
Available all year round, air freshener plugins work by gently warming the oil by plugging the device into an electric socket – hence the name – plug in. Believe it or not Air Wick have a Mince Pie scented plugin, now that I have to try!
Candles
One of the best things about the darker months is relaxing by candlelight. Whether it’s a soak in a hot bath or a romantic evening cuddled up on the sofa, as a nation we do love our candles! Business Matters Magazine states that the UK candle economy is now worth £1.9 billion per year! Here is a rather unusual seasonal find a Gingerbread scented candle from Robert Dyas. If you’re after something a little more traditional, then try this delightful Pomegranate Noir Candle available from Jo Malone
Make a simmer pot
If you are feeling creative, then one great way to make sure that your home smells amazing is to create a simmer pot. Fill a big pot with water, whole spices and some Autumnal fruit, berries and foliage, then let it simmer on a low heat for as long as you want your home to smell amazing. You need to be at home when doing this, not only to make sure that nothing happens to the pot, but also to top up the water levels. Some of the top things to add to a simmer pot include orange peels, cloves, cinnamon, apples, vanilla pods, pine needles and bay leaves. Warning: make sure all in your household know not to drink the contents, it might smell good, but some of the listed ingredients should not be ingested!
In the Car
You can even carry your Winter scents with you every where you go with this Black Ice Car Freshener from Halfords
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to make sure your home (and car) smells amazing at this time of year. Now of course the hard choice – which method will you use?
