I’m afraid there is nothing we can do about the weather, but we can help you to feel more Spring-like. There are plenty of things you can do to usher in Spring, new bedding can be one of the most rewarding, especially when you bear in mind that we spend on average a quarter of the day in bed. Who doesn’t love the feeling of clean sheets? There’s nothing better than a fresh cover, new pillows and the cool comfort of those cotton sheets. Now add that feeling to a fresh, new bedding design and a mini bed makeover and you’ll feel like Spring has finally sprung.
Air Your Mattress
While you might do it regularly, many people leave the mattress protector or under blanket for most of the winter. Spring is a great time to pull off all the sheets and give your mattress a good airing. It’s also a good opportunity turn the mattress which can not only provide more comfort but can improve its lifespan. This all depends, however, on whether you have a double-sided mattress or not – you should always check the manufacturer’s instructions before flipping or turning your mattress.
Whilst you have it exposed, it’s a good idea to give your mattress a good vacuum to get rid of any dust mites and dead skin cells.
Top Tip: If you want to add a little extra freshness, sprinkling some baking powder over your mattress and leaving for 30 minutes before vacuuming, it can make all the difference.
Change the Duvet Tog
With the warmer months (hopefully), you will soon want to change from your thick, high tog duvet to something a little lighter. This will ensure you continue to get a comfortable nights sleep during the warmer summer months.
Tog ratings can be a bit confusing but they are an indication of how warm the duvet is. A 13.5 tog duvet is usually suitable for winter and will keep you comfy however cold the temperature outside. Switching to a 4.5 tog duvet for spring and summer ensures you stay cosy and sleep well. Children tend to get a lot warmer than adults so a heavy tog duvet is not necessarily a good idea at any time of the year.
Refreshing Your Pillows
After a while, pillows can get rather flat and become less effective and even uncomfortable. If you have older pillows, you may want to take the opportunity of the onset of spring to replace them. If not, you can hang the pillows up outside to give them an airing or put them in the washing machine on a gentle wash (please read the care label on your pillows). If your pillows are made from natural down, it’s better to wash them by hand, however.
Fluffing them up after the wash and during the drying process, should ensure you put some plumpness back into your pillows.
Choosing Spring Bedding
This is also a great moment to choose new bedding to brighten things up for the Spring. There’s nothing better than slipping between fresh, new sheets and settling down for the night. Go for lighter, more summery colours and choose cotton as it’s the coolest for when the nights get a lot warmer. This bold, blossom print bed linen from La Redoute will brighten any bedroom, whilst this fun Flamingo design bed set from Wayfair, will soon have you dreaming of balmy Spring nights.
Children especially love new bedding and there are plenty of exciting designs available both in store and online. Debenhams have a beautiful spring bedding range for both boys and girls rooms.
Now you’ve indulged in a Spring bedding makeover, the last thing you need to do is wash and put away the winter bedding. If you are short of space, you can get bedding vacuum bags that not only reduce the bulk but also protect your duvets and covers.
