This October, we’re dedicating our 15×15 monthly efforts to supporting the phenomenal Grampian Women’s Aid, an Aberdeen city-based charity that provides vital services to women, children, and young people experiencing domestic abuse.
Why Grampian Women’s Aid?
Founded in 1977, Grampian Women’s Aid has been a beacon of hope for countless individuals affected by domestic violence. Their services include safe refuge, counselling, advocacy, and support groups. By providing a safe space and essential resources, they empower survivors to rebuild their lives.
The impact of domestic violence
Domestic violence is a pervasive issue in Scotland. According to Scottish Women’s Aid*,
- 1 in 5 women experience domestic violence over their lifetimes.
- Between 6–10% of women suffer domestic violence in a given year.
- It accounts for between 16% and one quarter of all recorded violence with one incident reported to the police every minute.
- In any one year, there are 13 million separate incidents of physical violence or threats of violence against women from partners or former partners.
- 2 women a week are killed by a male partner or former partner.
These statistics highlight the urgent need for services like Grampian Women’s Aid. (*Source, page 5.)
